Then, after saying goodbye to Diego and his family, we went home to take care of the ponds, feed the fish and let Frankie out. A few hours later, we showed up to Albarito's birthday party. Albarito is Cindy's husband. Cindy speaks a little English and helped us with the internet company two weeks ago. Their daughter, Sharon, is in my class. They live beside the school, so not far from us. Cindy had called us a few nights ago to invite us to his party. When we got there, Cindy ushered us to the outside yard where there were about six tables with chairs in a row under a white tarp. There were two DJs sitting on a small platform, playing Latin American music. Cindy introduced us to the few people who had already arrived. We sat across from a couple, Rolando and Maritza, who had lived in New Jersey for several years. Rolando spoke English well enough for us to converse the whole evening. Rolando was a truck driver when he was living in the States, but he came back to his hometown of Santa Maria to grow coffee and enjoy a simpler way of life, and to be his own boss. And of course there was more food... I feel like I've been eating all day long.. different to what we had this afternoon, but still very Tico. Although it wasn't that late, both Kevin and I were tired by 9:30 pm and wished Abaro a happy birthday one last time, thanked Cindy for everything and said our goodbyes to all the guests. Kevin and I remain incredibly grateful for all the genuine kindness that continues to be shown to us.
