My mum arrived last Wednesday. Kevin and I have been having so much fun with her, I forgot to write my blog post yesterday! Today, we entertained my mum's friends, Michael and Nicole, who are staying just west of San Jose for several weeks, so they thought they'd drive down and visit on their way to Uvita (on the Pacific coast). They were one of our first guests way back in 2013, so it was nice to be able to show them what we've been up to since the last time they were here. We sometimes take all the work we put into the property for granted. It's just another day, another project, but even for my mum who was here last January, there have been quite a few updates. It's rewarding to know the improvements are noticeable.
We have another busy week ahead. Tomorrow, Mum and I will go into San Marcos to do our weekly grocery shopping, then we have to catch some fish for our friend Tony. On Tuesday, Mum and I will be getting up ultra early to drive down to a small town, Tinamastes, between San Isidro de General and Dominical. There, we will be helping Tony at a market. He sells all kinds of fresh vegetables, cold-pressed apple juice and smoked trout. And now he's looking to sell fresh whole fish, and he asked me if I'd be willing to help out. So, Mum and I will display the fish on ice in a cooler and see what happens. It's about a two-hour drive and it will be nice for my mum to see this little market. Then, after we're done there, I'm going to take her to San Gerardo for lunch. Should be a nice day. And on Thursday, I'm taking to visit one of our friends' Japanese garden. I can't believe how quickly the time is flying by. Enjoy your week... I know I'll be enjoying mine.

Our luck with guests just keeps amazing us. We're so fortunate. Sorry I haven't written in a little while, but the B&B is keeping us hopping. Oh, when we think back and remember people telling us we were crazy to think travellers would want to visit such a remote place... we're sure glad we didn't listen to them. And we're sure glad we followed our tug. Like any business, it takes time to get some traction, but we're pleased with our progress so far and it seems our guests are, too. You can read the two latest entries in our Guestbook here. Okay, as I was helping myself to some cilantro and lettuce just steps from our back door, I realized I haven't shown an update on how things are growing since we transformed this contained space from a hot tub to an herb garden... thought I'd show you. The first picture is the 'before' picture... and then look at the difference in the second picture. The LOVE this garden. I had transplanted some aloe vera plants and they turned all brown and looked like they might now make it. But then, with a little time, they sprung to life and now are green and flowering. Can you see the lovely red flowers shooting out from their middle? I had no idea that the aloe flowered this way. I love just coming out and snipping off what I need and use it in my cooking. I try not to take it for granted.
We hosted a lovely family last week. Here's their son, Graham, catching their dinner. And here is what they had to say about their stay:
What a special place in the world is Hush Valley! Kevin and Anne, you make it even more special with your stewardship and kind hospitality. We have been so happy to visit here, and to meet you. What a privilege to stay here! The food and accommodations have been delightful and we so appreciate your close-to-the-land methods of farming and accommodating guests. We wish you well and will remember our stay here fondly. Kris, Bruce, Cam and Graham Columbus, Indiana, USA And as we said our goodbyes, we move quickly to prepare the guesthouse for our next guests who arrive tomorrow. Many of our guests are finding us on Airbnb (https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/929911). We highly recommend this site if you're running a hospitality venue like a B&B. We've achieved a 5 out of 5 stars from all our guests who have reviewed us so far. It feels good to know we're doing something right. It took a chance, work hard and it's paying off. |
