Today, after I came back from meeting Seidy and Angela, I went out and picked some peaches off our trees, rhubarb and golden berries (fantastic little fruit that grows inside a paper-like lantern...so yummy) from our garden, and decided to make a crumble with flour, fresh butter given to us by our dairy farm neighbour, and a bit of sugar (from the cane instead of processed). And just a dash of vanilla. This is my first crack at making dessert since we've been here. I think I'm going to try to make jam someday, too. I think golden berry jam would be so delicious! We have tons of blackberries in our pasture, which would also make great jam, I imagine. So many things to try! I hardly ever baked when I was in Canada: I never had the time, and rarely felt inspired, to be honest. I've often heard, from people who bake, that baking is a very creative activity. I never ever understood that because when I think of baking, I think of measuring, and measuring just reminds me of math (which is probably why I've avoided baking my whole life). Math has never been a creative outlet for me. I admit, I did look up my crumble recipe, but I basically check what ingredients I need and then I just wing it and hope for the best. I'm happy to report Kevin said it was 'bowl licking' good. It was pretty tasty, if I do say so myself. I may just have to make it again.
