![]() Adriana and Roberto (our dairy farmer neighbours) invited us for a cheese fondu dinner tonight. Roberto likes to cook and often takes pictures of meals to showcase his cheese on Facebook. He mentioned that he wanted to prepare a fondu, but that it would be nice to have several people share in the meal. We accepted graciously. When we got to their house at 6:30 pm, they invited us in and introduced us to Adriana's sister Leidy (pronounced Lady). A few years ago, Leidy spent time studying at York University in Toronto for 10 months so her English is quite good. She's a historian and is full of interesting information. Roberto served a 3-cheese fondu with yeast-free bread, eggplant, zucchini, pickled onions and blackberries to dip in. It was so tasty, we devoured the whole fondu and Roberto had to make another batch. The conversation was lively and we had a really good laugh. Roberto, who is usually quiet and quite shy, was in a mischievous mood and his sense of humour was out if full force! Adriana did really well conversing in English. Although she struggles to find the words she wants to use, she gets there in the end. Paul seemed to have a nice time, too. I was telling Paul that my fondest memories when I hitchhiked across Europe were the times when people invited my friend, Alise, and I to their homes and so generously offered their food and wine and shared their stories. We were strangers yet they opened their homes to us. Getting to experience the locals in their daily environment, was truly the highlight of my trip. Paul seems to agree and says he's really enjoying getting a glimpse into the Costa Rican local traditions.
