Forest Fire Update

I am borrowing this picture from Elizabeth, the Spanish teacher who teaches at our one-room school. She lives in Copey. This image shows exactly the sight I saw last night. It was pretty impressive... and scary. When I dropped Adriana and Paola home after our English class, we could see the bright orange flames from Adriana's house. It looked closer than it was. I came home and from our vantage point, down in our little valley, we could not see a thing... not even smoke.

And this picture is the one I took at 11:30 this morning. It looks a lot less ominous in the daytime. I met up with Seidy at the Copey Learning Center and she explained that unless it rains, the fire will travel down its mountain. Due to the shape of this particular mountain, there's a gully at the bottom where once the fire reaches it, it will extinguish on its own. She knows this from previous experience. There are no houses or farms on that mountain, so there's no danger unless people try to get too close to it. Hopefully, most of the the wildlife made it out safely to other neighbouring forests.
