Our neighbour, Primo, found a wounded Ornate Hawk-Eagle on his property. He told people in our 'hood' and Paola, who is a huge animal lover (Martin and Clara's daughter... and one of my students), started asking everyone she knew if they could possibly drive her and the bird to the only bird refuge in Costa Rica (or so we're told... although I do find it hard to believe), located in Alajuela (about 2 hours north from where we live). They rehabilitate injured animals there (but mostly birds). We accepted the task of driving in hopes of saving this amazing bird. We left at 7 am this morning and arrived back home at 2 pm. The refuge was expecting us and took this gorgeous bird off our hands. His wing was injured in such a way that he could no longer fly. He would have surely died if Primo had left him to fend for himself and hadn't taken him in. There wasn't anything anyone could to to mend him here, not even a vet, so the only solution was to take it to this refuge. Now, he will have a very real chance of surviving and when healed, he will be released in a bird sanctuary. Very happy ending, indeed
