Considering it's October, we've been blessed with lots of sunshine for the last 4 days, with very little rain. We're hoping we're not experiencing the calm before the storm, so to speak. Today, we went to San Jose with Adriana (the dairy farmer's wife) to get our Costa Rican driver's licence. Adriana navigated; it took an hour and a half to get to the licence office. Once we got there, Adriana asked all the right questions to the right people and we managed to avoid a long line-up. The clerk checked all our documents and told us we needed a few more photocopies. We headed out to find a photocopying place, which we found at the far end of the complex (I wonder if the clerk gets a kick-back from all the people who end up there). Photocopies in hand, we made our way back to the licence office where the clerk checked that our documents were now in order before ushering us to the waiting room. Two and a half hours later, we were served. Kevin was first and had no problems. Then I was next. I showed them my passport, which has my maiden name and my Ontario driver's licence, which has my married name. This was a problem. They could not get over this discrepancy. They needed proof that I was the same person. The fact that both pieces of identification had my picture on them was not enough (I guess in case I was a twin?). I remembered that I have two social insurance cards, one with my maiden name and one with my married name, and of course, both have the same number. So, I dug them out of my wallet and showed the clerk behind the desk. She perked up seemed hopeful. She went to ask her manager and came back with a big smile and said that yes, these would do the trick. Thank you driver's licence angel. Thank you! We were told to go to the bank to pay for the licences (remember, this is Costa Rica, just go with it, we do) then asked to come back. We did that and when we came back, we had our pictures and fingerprints taken, we signed a manual log book (how archaic) and received two licences each (one for car and one for motorcycle, which we need to drive the ATV - luckily, both Kevin and I already have motorcycles licences so we didn't have to do a road test). We then went for lunch, as Kevin was so hungry he could have eaten a scabby cat. We thanked Adriana for all her help, then dropped her off (she was staying in the city to see her family). We headed back home, happy that we checked off another box off our list. Next week, we go apply for immigration.
