On Friday, Kevin went with our friends Larry and Roger down to a farm (about an hour away) to get a tour of their laboratory. They grow special bacteria to help plants thrive without having to add harsh chemicals. We have so far stayed away from chemicals and we've been looking into permaculture practices and this organic 'potion', as I call it, has delivered some great results with Roger's garden. It was Roger that introduced us to it. We were, of course, very intrigued. It needs to be diluted in water and sprayed into the soil as well as on the leaves. The idea is it helps prevent mould/fungus, bugs from attacking the plants and poor soil from deteriorating further. The one Kevin bought is an 'all-purpose' solution. Kevin spent yesterday afternoon treating all our vegetable plants, fruit trees, flowers, and herbs. What's great is that our dog, Frankie, can roam on the grass and gardens without being exposed to nasty, poisonous chemicals.
We'll keep an eye on things and I'll report back if we see any improvement. I continue to collect leaves and spread the garden beds with it as mulch. It seems to help quite a bit. And now that I have a brand new trailer, I'll be harvesting manure to add to the compost. I can't believe it's already March... we'll be getting ready for the rainy season in a couple of months... wow, that came quickly! Kevin and I love the rain... so we don't mind.
