We received a phone call today from our friends Andrea and Beto. They run a theatre company in Costa Rica and tour the country, but they also run a volunteer program where people from Canada, the United States and Australia pay to come on a volunteer vacation. These are becoming more and more popular. Although many people like to sit on a beach, drink Margaritas and get a tan, many others are now looking for a different experience: they're looking to get closer to the culture and the people. Andrea and Beto receive groups of 15 to 20 volunteers who go to the schools and help paint murals, or help build a basketball court and so forth. Andrea and Beto have been doing this for the last five years and I guess word is getting around because this year they're busier than ever. They've hired Adriana to help organize and they're looking to expand their offering.
Andrea called us and asked if we would be willing to give their volunteers a tour of our project (Andrea always refers to our property as our 'project' because as she explains it we're always working and doing something to improve it). They would like us to give their volunteers a tour of our trout ponds, our gardens, our chickens and describe what it's like to live the way we do, and so forth. We are happy to participate. Not only will this help Andrea and Beto with what they want to achieve, but it might generate some business for us in return. Win-win really.
